Best Places to eat in Mcleodganj | Dharamsala (Part-2)

Like I said earlier, McLeodganj, for me, is a Food Heaven and I never leave an opportunity to go there just to savour the awesome delicacies on offer. After compiling a list of my favourite places to eat in McLeodganj last year, I went back again this summer to check out more eateries. As expected, McLeodganj 2.0 didn’t prove to be a futile, as I explored a number of newer eateries and loved exploring the food which they offered. So if you’re planning to go there, this and my previous list should be your food guide.

I couldn’t have asked for a better way to I kick off my Travel Stories month.

Morgans Place (Dharamkot)

Located in Dharamkot, 2 Km ahead of Mcleodganj, Morgans Place was earlier famous as ‘Out of The Blue’. This colourful café belongs to a well- travelled, hard working guy from Kanyakumari named Murugan. Famous for serving delicious pizzas and other delectable Italian delicacies, this place must be visited by all foodies and travelers alike. You can sit in the upstairs section and enjoy the sight of Triund and the majesty of Himalayas.

For all the coffee lovers, this place could easily be your favourite haunt. Choiphel, the owner of the café, has earlier owned Coffee Talk in the same area. He is well travelled and has learnt the art of coffee making and roasting the beans, from his trips to Canada and USA. He believes in making different types of coffee with specialized beans and giving each flavour an authentic touch. Visit the café for it’s comfortable seating, coffee, finest smoothies, pancakes and Tibetan Meals.

Located in the heart of Mcleodganj near the main chowk, The Clay Oven is a beautiful, spacious café. The menu offers a variety of cuisines to choose from, but the place is especially popular for serving Nepali Thali. People from all walks of life and different ethnicities can be seen, savouring delicious vegetable curries, meat, rice and papadams. One must also try their finger licking good Red Thai Curry with Rice and I bet, this will be the best Thai curry you’d ever find in this area.

Away from the mayhem of Jogiwara Road in Mcleodganj, Joyful Café is located in Dharamsala behind the famous Norbulinka Institute. Make your visit to Dharamsala worthwhile and visit this café to relish the best wood-fired oven pizzas. Besides specializing in lovely thin crust cheese pizzas, they serve equally delightful coffee, cakes and pies. You can also try the more local Tibetan Pizza, with the toppings of Mutton and nuts. Started by a lovely couple – Kynsai and Chiyomi, Joyful Café is a joyful place for foodies indeed.

This much-celebrated vegetarian Japanese restaurant, Lung Ta, is run by a Japanese lady (also the chef) and her Tibetan husband, Sonam. They have a set meal for each day in the menu and every Tuesday & Friday they serve Sushi. Savour Omurice (Omelette made with fried rice and topped with sauce) as you look at the mountains from their outdoor seating. The portions are good and it’s a complete value for money. The quiet owners of this wonderful eatery, let the delectable food talk and the number of people walking in serve a testimony to that.

Okay, so this is where you get the best Rabri, Badam Milk and Punjabi Makhkhan Lassi in Kangra. This place is 28 years old, run by an enthusiastic man named Kaku. This sweet shop is famous for its Badam Milk and having Khali as its unofficial brand Ambassador. You’ve got to visit the place for the sheer love for milk and mithais.

Mutton Momos

Located right next to Kangra Valley School, this little nameless corner shop, sells Mutton Momos like no other. Big in size, with juicy and spicy filling of mutton, the momos can surprisingly be enjoyed steamed as well as fried. Their momos are so famous, that they get over by 4 PM. So, in case, you are passing by Dharamsala, do not forget to stop at Sheila Chowk and try these succulent momos.
