Delhi summers have become so evil, that I seemed to have lost my appetite for any sort of yummy food, containing meat and fat. I only feel like having light stuff or fluids and refrain from stepping out of my comfortable den.

However, one fine day I fixed up a meeting with two sisters Mona and Sheetal over Lunch, at their residence-cum-kitchen called Yoga Cafe. I braved the 45 degrees heat to take the metro and there on, a rickshaw to reach East of Kailash. And the only reason being, I was fascinated by their unconventional approach to healthy Gluten free/ dairy free food.

I had already almost finished my water bottle and didn’t shy away from asking for more water. As soon as I felt replenished, we started to converse about their food and more. They told me they were earlier located at Shahpur Jat, but only recently started running the kitchen from their home. They deliver all over Delhi and have a menu that changes every week.

As soon as the food was served, I dug into the food, that had chicken as well, but felt very light.

The beautiful platters had tamarind red rice in a bell pepper, Lasagne cups and green salad with fruits.

Unlike many people I know, I absolutely adore bell peppers. Green, yellow, orange or red I can eat them all raw and feel really content. However, out here, the yellow pepper was grilled and had a filling of tamarind red rice. The rice was cooked to perfection in tamarind sauce with veggies and fenugreek. The combination of grilled pepper and tamarind rice, rightly balanced different textures and flavours.

The Lasagna Cups were made with gluten free flour, filled with smoked, seasoned, grilled minced chicken in a tangy sauce. This dish confirms that you don’t need any sort of butter or ghee to make your food tasty. The filling was juicy, herby and perfectly put together, inside crunchy gluten free wheat cups.

Boiled chickpea salad with a skinless piece of mango was served on the side.

The green salad had, cucumber, skinny cucumber, olives and tomato dressing. It was served with gluten free bread and dairy free cheese with garlic and herbs. Being a baker myself, I have never come across gluten free bread that would taste so soft and yummy. The cheese was delicious as well.

This was followed by fig cookies and cinnamon crackers. The soft cookies just melted in my mouth and the fact it didn’t carry any butter, both amazed and delighted me at the same time.

The homemade dairy free yoghurt, with slices of fresh cut mango can be the perfectly suitable answer to summers.

While gorging on the tasty yet healthy food, I came to know that Mona is an architect and Sheetal has worked at various places in the corporate world. But their passion for food and healthy eating gave birth to the concept of Yoga Café.

Amazingly, they also make fatless cakes, baked samosas and dairy free butter chicken, just so that they can provide a wide range of options to their customers, without compromising on taste. And of course, when they have a customer who repeats an order, they beam with happiness.

We finished our meal and there were no signs of drowsiness. I realized that this weather does not demand you skipping a meal, but just having healthy wholesome food. Yoga Café proves that if you are willing to be innovative and experimental, there is no dearth of options for the carb-conscious or the vegans either.
